Homologies: Termitoidae

50” x 40” Digital Print on Archival Paper.

In the Homologies seriesvisual artifacts are created as vehicles of communication for the latent spaces of animal movement.  This digital print was created in collaboration with movement ecologist Diego Ellis-Soto and composer Matthew Suttor, using the sonification and data files from the Collective Pulse collaboration. Movement from hundreds of termites in a petri dish was captured and recalibrated to a liner tendon-like structure, expressing the speed (grayscale) and direction (x and y axis) of the collective movement; an alternative way of viewing the activity in a very animated petri dish.
